International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 17 Oct 2021
International Day for the Eradication of Poverty aims to find ways to mitigate and eradicate poverty and acknowledge the effort and struggle of people living in poverty.
International
Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed annually on October 17 worldwide
and highlights worldwide poverty, violence and hunger.
The day aims to find ways to
mitigate and eradicate poverty, acknowledge the effort and struggle of people
living in poverty and give them a chance to be heard.
Poverty is a violation of human rights and there is a need for people from across the world to come together to ensure that these rights are respected. Without achieving a poverty-free world, it is hard to imagine the development of humankind.
History and
significance
The event was first commemorated
in Paris, France, in 1987 at the Human Rights and Liberties Plaza at the
Trocadéro to honor victims of poverty, hunger, violence, and fear. The commemorative
stone was unveiled by Joseph Wresinski, founder of the International Movement
ATD Fourth World.
Then, in 1992, the United Nations
(UN) officially designated October 17 as the International Day for the
Eradication of Poverty.
This day is marked to raise awareness and highlight the problems faced by poverty-stricken people or families and work towards eradicating poverty globally in all its forms.
Such
people are deprived of basic needs and are exposed to unsafe housing, dangerous
work conditions, unequal access to justice, lack of political power and have
limited access to health care.
