Several areas in Japan lost power on Tuesday after the government issued its first-ever electricity supply warning. The warning came amid a power shortage after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake last week shut several plants. On Tuesday, Japan issued an emergency plea for citizens, businesses and local authorities to conserve energy. Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) asked users to conserve energy due to plant shutdowns following the quake. But with sporadic snowfall and unseasonably cold temperatures in the capital, demand remained strong. Japan's industry minister Koichi Hagiuda warned of more power cuts to prevent a total blackout.
