By LAKSHY DREAM FOUNDATION GLOBAL NEWS Web Desk: A boy in Turkey has donated his pocket money to relief efforts amid Monday’s devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. The 9-year-old survived an earthquake last year.

Alparslan Efe Demir was forced to live in a tent after a 5.9 earthquake hit Turkey’s northwestern Duzce province in November. Demir was heartbroken as he saw footage of destruction on television.

The boy, upset by the sufferings of thousands, told his mother, Sinem Demir, that he wanted to donate his piggy bank money to relief funds.

The boy and his mother then visited the Duzce branch of the Turkish Red Crescent and handed over the money to the authorities.

He even wrote a letter for the earthquake survivors.

“I was very scared when there was an earthquake in Duzce. I had the same fear when I heard about the earthquake in many of our cities. That is why I decided to send the pocket money given by my elders to the children there,” he said.

“It is okay if I do not buy chocolate here. Children there should not be cold or hungry. I will send my clothes and toys to the children there,” he wrote.

Early Monday morning, a 7.7 magnitude quake struck southern Türkiye’s Kahramanmaras province, then about nine hours later, a 7.6 magnitude quake hit the same region.

Thousands have been killed and several more have been injured in Turkey’s 10 provinces. The earthquake was also felt in several countries in the region, including Syria and Lebanon. In Syria, too, thousands were killed and hundreds injured.
