In Short

Apple is not left with any choice but to include USB Type-C port in its iPhones.

Apple may add a custom IC chip to its USB-C port, similar to the authentication process in the Lightning port.

Last year, the European Union ordered Apple to include the USB-C connector for their charging ports.

By LAKSHY DREAM FOUNDATION GLOBAL NEWS : Apple is not left with any choice but to include a USB Type-C port in its iPhones, but there’s a huge plot twist. As per latest rumors, you will not be able to charge your iPhone with your Android charger because Apple is planning to introduce a customised USB Type-C port, which will be made exclusively for iPhones. Last year, the European Union ordered Apple to include a USB-C connector for their charging ports. Apple has already included USB Type-C ports in its MacBook and iPad. The company has confirmed the same for the iPhones.

While Apple has agreed to comply with the EU's order, a new report published on Weibo, China's Twitter alternative, reveals that the company may not make it so simple after all. iPhones will include a USB Type-C port, but Apple is planning on using a custom integrated circuit (IC) interface for the port. The Cupertino-giant has equipped its iPhones with a lightning port, which has an authentication process built into it. In simple terms, no other charger can be used to charge an iPhone other than the one designed exclusively for it.

The Gates of Europe

As per the latest rumours, Apple may add a custom IC chip to its USB-C port, similar to the authentication process in the Lightning port. This could mean that non-Apple accessories that are not part of the "Made for iPhone" program may not work as well as "authentic" accessories. For example, fast charging and high-speed data transfer may be limited. However, it's unclear what the exact implications would be and it's possible that the EU may intervene if this would break the purpose of the USB-C being a universal interface.

Previously, Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, had said at The Wall Street Journal’s Tech Live conference in October that Apple will "obviously" have to comply" with the rule. "We have no choice," Joswiak said when asked about whether Apple will switch to USB Type C port as per the EU directive.

The Indian government is also planning to make it mandatory for the smartphone makers to make USB Type C a standard charging port for all electronic devices by March 2025. “BIS has notified standards for Type-C chargers and the government will come up with two common types of charging ports for mobiles and wearable electronic devices,” Rohit Kumar Singh, Secretary to the Department of Consumer Affairs, said.
