Chaitra Navratri 2023

Happy Chaitra Navratri 2023

Navratri has been a long-standing custom with significant religious significance. We also know that Navratri is unquestionably one of the most significant Hindu holidays, one that is fervently and enthusiastically observed throughout the country. Yet, few people are aware that it is observed four times a year during various seasons. These are the Paush/Magha Navratri, Sharada Navratri, Ashadha Navratri, and Chaitra Navratri.

Sharada Navratri in the Varsha ritu (the beginning of fall) and

Chaitra Navratri in the Vasanta ritu (the season of spring) are two of the most significant ones.

Chaitra Navratri 2023

The temple priest has rung his bell.

A cloud of smoke from candles and lamps

Haloes the Goddess, glowing bright

This beat of drums both maddens and dulls.

The incense burns: so heady the musk,

Our senses flounder in the flood.

This endless chant of sacred words

Soon drugs our lips and stuns our minds.

The Goddess, always staring down:

Her painted pupils cut through smoke

And read the secret thoughts we think.

We somehow feel this within our hearts.

To Mother, we know, we bow and pray –

Her form not just this image of clay.
Nine nights for goddess Durga

Full of dance and songs

People worship her image

With flowers and prayers long.

May the Goddess bless us

With precious gifts to mankind

People praise her image

Full of beauty divine!

It is the time to celebrate

With dance, music and colors,

And to remind all of us

That, women must be respected.

Culmination is of course with Dussehra,

When the good takes over the evil,

And we the common mortals

Remind ourselves to think and do only good.
