Mahavir Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir
who is known as the founder of ‘Jainism’. Mahavir Jayanti, also known as
Mahavir Janma Kalyanak is one of the most important religious festivals in Jainism which celebrates the birth of a great Tirthankara of Jainism. Lord Mahavir, who was the 24th and last Tirthankara of present Avasarpiṇī, was born in the early part of the 6th century BCE into a royal Kshatriya Jain family in ancient India. He was a successor of the 23rd Tirthankara Parshvanatha.
Mahavir Jayanti occurs either in March or April every year as per the Gregorian calendar. This year, it will be celebrated on April 4, 2023.
Lord Mahavira abandoned all worldly possessions at the age of about 30 and left home in pursuit of spiritual awakening. He preached for 30 years and attained Moksha or liberation in the 6th century BCE.
The festival is celebrated throughout India with great enthusiasm, especially among the Jain community. People wake up early and take a holy bath before beginning their prayers. The idol of Lord Mahavir is carried out on a chariot, in a procession called rath yatra, and on the way stavans or religious rhymes are recited. Statues of Mahavir are given a ceremonial anointment called the abhisheka and are offered flowers. Sweets and fruits are also offered to the idol. During the day, most members of the Jain community engage in some sort of charitable act, prayers, pujas, and vratas. Many devotees visit Jain temples dedicated to Mahavir to meditate and offer their prayers. This day is considered auspicious for any new beginnings. It is also believed that doing great deeds, such as helping the poor and needy, bestows the blessings of the lord.
