Congress says Digvijaya and Kamal Nath like 'Jai-Veeru', BJP reacts

Congress said that the relationship between Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan (in Sholay) is the same as between Digvijaya Singh and Kamal Nath. BJP replied with calling them "jail escapes".

As politics heats up in Madhya Pradesh ahead of the state assembly polls, the equation between state Congress chief Kamal Nath and senior party leader Digvijaya Singh is back in the spotlight. The party has now equated Kamal Nath and Digvijaya Singh with the characters 'Jai' and 'Veeru' in the iconic film 'Sholay,' played by Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra, respectively.

Asked about the relationship between the two former chief ministers, Congress general secretary Randeep Surjewala said, "The relationship between Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan (in Sholay) is the same as between Singh and Nath. Neither 'Gabbar Singh' (film’s lead villain) could get them into a fight (in the movie), nor will BJP’s Gabbar Singh be able to get it done here".

His comments came amid reports that the change in the candidates for some seats was due to differences between the two party stalwarts. However, Surjewala said the party has decided on changes in some seats, and the matter is over now.

"Surjewala, however, charged that there is a "huge conflict" going on within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over ticket distribution.

They say such things every day to display their irritation. What is the problem of BJP with our party? There is love and coordination between Digvijaya Singh, Kamal Nath, and all our leaders. This is for the development and progress of Madhya Pradesh," Surjewala said.

In the 1975 Bollywood blockbuster 'Sholay,' Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra played the role of two thick friends who fled from jail and later fought with the dacoit Gabbar Singh.

Meanwhile, the BJP called the Congress leaders similar to the "deceitful characters of Jai and Veeru, who escaped from jail".

"These were the movie characters who escaped from jail. The same is the condition of Mr Bantadhar (as BJP calls Singh) and Corruptionnath (Nath dubbed by BJP) in Madhya Pradesh. They have looted Congress workers. They looted the general public whenever they got an opportunity. No one was spared from these two," BJP

spokesperson Pankaj Chaturvedi said.

The election for the 230-seat Madhya Pradesh assembly is scheduled for November 17 in a single phase, with counting to be held on December 3.
