IIT-Kharagpur student found hanging in hostel room, suicide suspected
The body of an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Kharagpur student was found hanging in his hostel room.
An IIT-Kharagpur student was found hanging in his hostel room on Wednesday, the police said. The body of the fourth-year student from Telangana has been sent for a post-mortem examination.
His body was first found by his friends after which he was rushed to the hospital. However, the doctors declared him brought dead.
The police have initiated a probe into the matter and a case of unnatural death has been registered.
The IITs are centrally funded technical institutes located across India and are considered premier institutes. Recently, there have been incidents of suicides at these institutes and in most cases, academic stress is to be blamed.
Last month, a 21-year-old student, identified as Anil Kumar, died by suicide inside his hostel room at IIT-Delhi. Preliminary investigations into the case revealed the student was pursuing a B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing. He was placed on an extension due to some incomplete subjects and had been staying at the hostel for the past six months.
Though the police did not recover any suicide notes in the student's room, the reason for taking such an extreme step was suspected to be academic stress.
