China’s entertainment industry is booming but needs some slack

China's entertainment industry is booming, but it needs some breathing room.

The craze for microdramas is one example of the ongoing creative boom in China.

Artistic film critics are unlikely to be impressed by China's microdramas. Nevertheless, the roughly two-minute episodes, which condense serial stories into a short-video format, are extremely popular. Watched almost exclusively on mobile devices, viewers can mindlessly scroll through episodes like they watch clips on TikTok. Revenue from microdramas in China is projected to nearly double to 90 billion yuan ($12.7 billion) this year—more than cinema ticket sales. Chinese studios shot 40,000 of these in the first eight months of the year (a typical series consists of 90 episodes).
