The name Dev Deepawali suggests that it is the Diwali of the gods. It is a festival celebrated for Kartik Purnima which is mainly celebrated in Varanasi. It comes fifteen days after Diwali, the festival of lights.
Significance of Dev Deepawali
Dev Deepawali is also known as Tripuraotsav or Tripurari Poornima Snan. This festival is celebrated to celebrate the victory of Lord Shiva over the demon Tripurasur.

It is believed that on the day of Dev Deepawali, the deities descend on the earth to bathe in the holy river Ganges at the Ganges Ghats in Varanasi. That is why on this day earthen lamps are lit in the Ganges river. This tradition of lighting the lamp was started in 1985 from Panchganga Ghat.
Millions of lamps are lit on the banks of the Ganges
In the gaiety of this day, people light lakhs of earthen lamps on the steps of all the ghats on the banks of the holy Ganges river every year on the day of Dev Deepawali. On this day the holy Ganga Aarti is performed by 21 Brahmin priests and 24 women. At this time thousands of devotees and tourists are present here. The lighting of the ghats and the floating diyas are attractive on this day. The view here is breathtaking on this day.
Dev Deepawali 2021 Interesting Facts
The 5-day festival begins on Devotthan Ekadashi and ends on the day of Kartik Purnima.
On the day of Kartik Purnima, people take Kartik bath, especially the devotees reach from every corner of the country to take a bath in the holy Ganges river.
On this day in the evening a lamp is lit with oil and it is flown in the Ganges river.
In the evening, there is a grand Ganga Aarti at Dashmeshwar Ghat. Thousands of devotees are present at this time.
During the Ganga Aarti, bhajan-kirtan, rhythmic drums and drums, conch shells are played.

देव दीपावली का महत्व
देव दीपावली को त्रिपुरोत्सव या त्रिपुरारी पूर्णिमा स्नान के रूप में भी जाना जाता है. यह त्योहार असुर त्रिपुरासुर पर भगवान शिव की जीत की खुशी में मनाया जाता है.
पृथ्वी पर गंगा स्नान करने आते हैं देवता
ऐसी मान्यता है कि देव दीपावली के दिन देवतागण वाराणसी में गंगा घाटों पर पवित्र गंगा नदी में स्नान करने के लिए पृथ्वी पर अवतरित होते हैं. इसलिए इस दिन गंगा नदी में मिट्टी के दीपक जलाए जाते हैं. दीप जलाने की इस परंपरा की शुरुआत 1985 में पंचगंगा घाट से हुई थी.
गंगा के तट पर जलाए जाते हैं लाखों दीपक
इस दिन के उल्लास में लोग प्रत्येक साल देव दीपावली के दिन पवित्र गंगा नदी के तट पर सभी घाटों की सीढ़ियों पर लाखों मिट्टी के दीपक जलाते हैं. इस दिन पवित्र गंगा आरती 21 ब्राह्मण पुजारियों और 24 महिलाओं द्वारा की जाती है. इस समय हजारों की संख्या में भक्त और पर्यटक यहां मौजूद होते हैं. इस दिन घाटों की रोशनी और तैरते हुए दीये आकर्षक होते हैं. इस दिन यहां को दृश्य मनमोहक होता है.

: 5 दिवसीय उत्सव देवोत्थान एकादशी से शुरू होता है और कार्तिक पूर्णिमा के दिन समाप्त होता है.
: कार्तिक पूर्णिमा के दिन लोग कार्तिक स्नान करते हैं, खासतौर पर भक्त पवित्र गंगा नदी में स्नान करने देश के कोने-कोने से पहुंचते हैं.
: इस दिन शाम को तेल से दीप जलाकर गंगा नदी में प्रवाहित किया जाता है.
: शाम को दशमेश्वर घाट पर भव्य गंगा आरती की होती है. इस वक्त हजारों की संख्या में श्रद्धालु उपस्थित होते हैं.
