By LAKSHY DREAM FOUNDATION GLOBAL NEWS: If all goes as planned, the Agra Metro Rail will be flagged off by the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The UP metro rail corporation officials are trying hard to achieve the timeline. This week, the underground tunneling machine underwent final trials before being put to use to dig the underground tunnel from the Taj Mahal to Agra College and onwards.
The metro rail track will be about 30 km long, out of which the first corridor from Sikandra to Taj Mahal will be 14 km long and the second corridor from Agra Cantt Railway station to Kalindi Vihar will be 16 km long. The UPMRC's priority is to complete the first 6 km corridor from the Taj Mahal to Agra College, while the tender for the Sikandra, Guru Ka Tal, and ISBT stations will be issued soon.
All three stations will be elevated and the track will cross the highway. Therefore, the railings and streetlights will be removed from the highway.
Due to heavy machinery being used for the construction of the metro corridor, barricading is being installed along the path and the UPMRC will be posting two dozen marshals on NH-19 to manage the traffic during the construction of the corridor.
The UPMRC will also be installing extra lights to assist the traffic after the removal of streetlights. Warning signs will also be installed 200 meters from the construction site.
Meanwhile, Agra Tourist Welfare Chamber secretary Vishal Sharma reiterated his earlier stand that Agra did not need a metro train. But since the project has already begun, care should be taken to minimize dust pollution and other issues being caused by the construction of the metro corridor, affecting the tourists coming to Agra.
He suggested that the local administration should keep the tourism industry in the loop regarding the project so that tourists can be informed in advance about the possible problems they may face while visiting the Taj Mahal.
