Holika Dahan is a Hindu festival celebrated annually on the full moon day in the Hindu month of Phalguna, which falls in February or March. March 07, 2023, is the date scheduled for the celebration of Holika Dahan this year. Holika Dahan is also known as Chhoti Holi, which is celebrated the day before the main Holi festival. The celebration signifies the triumph of virtue over malevolence.
According to Hindu mythology, the festival commemorates the story of Prahlada, a young devotee of Lord Vishnu, and his evil father, Hiranyakashipu. Hiranyakashipu wanted to kill his son because he refused to worship him as a god.
However, Prahlada's devotion to Lord Vishnu saved him from his father's evil plans, and Hiranyakashipu was ultimately killed by Lord Vishnu in the form of Narasimha. On the day of Holika Dahan, people gather in open spaces and light bonfires to symbolize the burning of evil. They also perform puja and offer prayers to Lord Vishnu and seek his blessings.
People also apply tilak, a mark made with coloured powder, on each other's foreheads as a sign of goodwill. In addition to religious significance, Holika Dahan also has cultural significance.
