India pacer Mohammed Shami made a triumphant return to the Indian team. Shami, who had been sidelined for the first four matches of the ODI World Cup 2023, picked a wicket on his very first delivery of the tournament.

Shami, bowling in the 9th over of the match, knocked over opener Will Young to hand India their second wicket of the match. Shami bowled his delivery on the hard length. The pacer nipped the ball slightly into the right hander, which caught him off guard. The ball struck the inside edge of the bat and crashed into the off stump, dismissing the batter.
With that, Shami also went past Anil Kumble in the list of highest wicket-takers for India in the ODI World Cup. Shami. now has 32 wickets from 12 matches, in a list that is led by Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath.

Both Zaheer and Srinath have 44 wickets each. Zaheer leads the list for picking the wickets in 23 matches, while Srinath achieved the same in 34 matches in the premier ICC tournament.
India dominated New Zealand with the ball after choosing to field first in Dharamsala. India pacers found an abundance of swing in the first powerplay and dominated the New Zealand batters. Devon Conway was the first to fall in the fourth over of the match after Mohammed Siraj trapped the batter at short mid-wicket.
India however, were guilty of fielding poorly in the game, where Ravindra Jadeja dopped the catch of Rachin Ravindra at point. India captain Rohit Sharma also walked off the field in the powerplay after hurting his fingers while grabbing the ball.
At the time of writing, New Zealand were 53/2 in 13 overs.
