A day after his four associates were arrested in connection with the Parliament security breach, main conspirator Lalit Mohan Jha (32) allegedly destroyed all technical evidence, including mobile phones, on Thursday morning before he was nabbed.
On Wednesday, while the four accused — Manoranjan D, Sagar Sharma, Neelam Verma, and Amol Shinde — opened smoke cans inside and outside the Parliament and were apprehended from the spot, Jha, who had live-streamed the event, managed to escape with their ID cards and mobile phones. Said a police source, “Around 11.30 pm, he reached Kuchaman city on a bus where he met his associate, Mahesh. He too was supposed to join the group, but couldn’t make it after his mother stopped him. Mahesh was connected with Jha and the others via a Facebook group called ‘Bhagat Singh Fan Page’.”
Investigation revealed that Mahesh, along with his cousin Kailash, took Jha to a dhaba and requested the owner for a room. “The dhaba owner knew Mahesh and gave them a room. On Thursday morning, Jha, with their help, destroyed the phones. Mahesh and Jha then left, telling Kailash they were going to surrender before the Parliament,” the source said.
Police managed to trace Kailash’s phone number and detained him on Thursday afternoon. “He told police Jha and Mahesh had left for Jaipur on a train and would board a bus for Delhi. Police started conducting raids… meanwhile, proper security arrangements were made near the Parliament. In the evening, police found the duo were near Dhaula Kuan… After some time, they reached Kartavya Path police station to surrender,” an officer said.
“Jha and Mahesh were handed over to the Counter-Intelligence Unit of the Special Cell, which is investigating the incident. Police are planning to book Mahesh and Kailash on charges of harbouring (the accused) and destroying evidence. They have sought legal opinion,” a senior police officer said.

Jha’s Instagram account has photos and quotes of Bhagat Singh, Chandrasekhar Azad, Bagha Jatin, Subhash Chandra Bose, and Raja Ram Mohan Roy. Police said investigation also revealed it was Jha who had taken the four others to his friend Vicky’s house in Gurgaon when they reached the Capital three days ago.
