Political tension in Pakistan is rising as the time for the Long March led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan approaches Islamabad. This march, which started from Lahore on October 28, is expected to reach Islamabad on November 4. Commentators in Pakistan have said that due to the political confrontation, it is becoming increasingly difficult for the Shahbaz Sharif government to handle the troubled economy.
Meanwhile, the government has tightened the noose on Imran Khan. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has now summoned Imran Khan for questioning in connection with the controversial diplomatic message from the US during the then Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led by Imran Khan. He has been asked to appear before the agency on Thursday. FIA is the intelligence investigation agency of Pakistan. On its behalf, Mian Shabbir Hussain has sent a letter to Imran Khan, in which he has been asked to appear on November 3 at 12 noon.
Observers have seen the FIA's action as part of the government's attempt to stop the long march. It is feared here that if Imran does not appear on Thursday, then he may be arrested by making it an excuse.
The FIA has said that it will also question Imran Khan on the allegation of receiving banned donations on Thursday. The Election Commission of Pakistan is also hearing the matter. The FIA has also summoned PTI's vice-president Shah Mehmood Qureshi on November 3 in the US messaging case.
According to analysts, this action of the FIA has increased the political conflict. Earlier on Tuesday, Imran Khan challenged former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz, the vice-president of the current ruling coalition's main party, Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), to contest against him in their constituencies. Maryam is the daughter of Nawaz Sharif. Imran Khan claimed that he would defeat both of them in their own constituencies.
On the other hand, Maryam Nawaz said in a press conference in London that now the real agenda of Imran Khan has been exposed. He claimed that Imran Khan has not organized this march in the interest of the nation, but his aim is to prevent the present government from appointing the next Chief of Army Staff. But he said that the Shahbaz Sharif government will go ahead with the appointment process.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has claimed that Imran Khan had approached the government last month for talks on two issues. One of these issues was the appointment of the Chief of Army Staff. Sharif said he refused to meet Imran Khan.
According to observers, Shahbaz Sharif and his government are constantly claiming to make such disclosures, which tarnish the reputation of Imran Khan. But so far these efforts have not been successful. While the atmosphere is getting heated due to the acid words being said from both the sides. Meanwhile, the fear of violence and disorder in the country has deepened.
