Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson picked up three wickets apiece, ensuring England kept breaking partnerships and never allowed India to build a commanding total.

Kohli batted with assurance after walking in following Shubman Gill's dismissal, finding the boundary regularly and stitching together a useful stand with Rohit Sharma. Rohit weathered an uneasy start before falling for 26. Kohli's dismissal, however, triggered a collapse as Washington Sundar, Axar Patel and Shivam Dube all departed in quick succession, leaving Iyer to hold the innings together almost single-handedly.
