Let the matter be investigated by the right forum of Parliament, said the Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Derek O'Brien on Sunday on 'cash-for-query' accusations against party leader Mahua Moitra.
Let the matter be investigated by the right forum of Parliament, said the Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Derek O'Brien on Sunday on 'cash-for-query' accusations against party leader Mahua Moitra.
The TMC MP said that Mahua Moitra had been advised by the party to clarify her position regarding the allegations.
Derek O'Brien said, “We have observed reports in the media. The member concerned has been advised by the party leadership to clarify her position regarding the allegations levelled against her. She has already done that. However, since the matter has to do with an elected MP, let the matter be investigated by the right forum of Parliament- after which the party leadership will take an appropriate decision.”
A political storm erupted last Sunday on October 15 after BJP MP Nishikant Dubey accused Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mahua Moitra of "asking questions in Parliament in exchange for cash and gifts" from a businessman.
MAHUA MOITRA BRIBE CONTROVERSY
A row erupted after Nishikant Dubey accused Moitra of taking bribes from a businessman to ask questions in Parliament and urged Speaker Om Birla to constitute an inquiry committee to look into the charges against her. Birla has referred Dubey's complaint to Parliament's Ethics Committee.
Citing a letter he received from Dehadrai, Dubey said the lawyer shared "irrefutable" evidence of bribes being given to Moitra.
In his letter to Birla, Dubey claimed 50 of 61 questions she asked in the Lok Sabha till recently were focused on the Adani Group, the business conglomerate which the TMC MP has often accused of malpractices, more so after it was at the receiving end of a critical report by short-seller Hindenburg Research.
The row intensified with the firebrand TMC leader blaming a "Fake Degree MP" and her "jilted ex" for the controversy.
Filing a plea in the Delhi High Court on October 17, Moitra denied the allegations and claimed they were designed to damage her reputation.
On October 20, the Delhi High Court heard Moitra's petition seeking directions to restrain Dubey, Dehadrai and several social media platforms and media houses from posting, circulating or publishing any fake and defamatory content against her.
The next hearing will be on October 31.
