Video: Trudeau booed during visit to mosque over response to Israel-Hamas war
During a visit to a mosque, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was booed and shouted at by people who demanded that he call for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
As many as 33 MPs had recently signed a letter addressed to the Canadian Prime Minister asking Canada to join the call for an immediate ceasefire and help facilitate the opening of a humanitarian corridor to the Gaza Strip.
The crowded enclave has been under a complete siege imposed by Israel, with aid agencies warning that hospitals are running beyond capacity amid a shortage of food, fuel and water.
The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed Trudeau attended the International Muslims Organization of Toronto on Friday. In a written statement, spokesman Mohammad Hussain said Trudeau went “to show his support to those impacted in the Muslim community from the horrific events in the Middle East", reported The Toronto Sun.
TRUDEAU'S RESPONSE TO ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR
Trudeau has not taken a side in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, and has made diplomatic remarks on the conflict. He had condemned Hamas and defended Israel’s “right to defend itself” against the attack launched by the Palestinian group.
Later, he said Canada is still committed to a two-state solution to create peace between Israel and Palestine.
The Canadian Prime Minister said Hamas does not represent the Palestinian people nor do they speak for Muslim or Arab communities.
Justin Trudeau also announced in the House of Commons that Canada is calling for a humanitarian corridor so that essential aid like food, fuel and water can be delivered to civilians in Gaza.
