Centre's free ration scheme extended for next 5 years, says PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced the extension of the Centre's free ration scheme for 80 crore poor people for the next five years.
In a pro-poor move ahead of next year's Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday that the government has decided to provide free food grains to more than 80 crore people for the next five years.
"I have decided that the BJP government will extend the scheme of providing free rations to 80 crore poor people in the country for the next 5 years. Your love and blessings always give me the strength to make sacred decisions," PM Modi said.
He was addressing a public rally in poll-bound Chhattisgarh. PM Modi also took a swipe at the Congress, accusing it of prioritising financial gains and frequently engaging in corrupt activities.
Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) was introduced during the Covid pandemic in 2020, under which the government supplied 5 kg of food grain free of cost to individuals. This was in addition to the regular quota of food grains given under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday unveiled BJP's manifesto for the upcoming Chhattisgarh Assembly election at an event in Raipur.
The manifesto, titled 'Modi ki Guarantee 2023', includes health insurance schemes, cooking gas subsidies and sponsored visits to Ram temple in Ayodhya for poor people in the state, among other promises.
A key highlight of the manifesto is the 'Invest Chhattisgarh' initiative, aimed at attracting investment and fostering economic growth. The BJP also plans to bring transparency to the Chhattisgarh Public Service Commission (CGPSC) by conducting exams on the lines of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
